My Year in Cities 2016

For the fourth year, this is my “year in cities”—for 2016. These are places where we spent at least a night—the day trip list follows. Cities marked with an * were visited multiple times on non-consecutive days. I’m fairly liberal with my definition of a city here—some of the members of this list are towns or otherwise named geographic places.

Although we made it out of the U.S. for a few weeks this year, it felt like we travelled less overall. Flying to a destination, as we did this year, instead of going on a days-long road trip fundamentally changes your perception of the entire voyage. It becomes entirely about getting to the destination rather than all of the stops and serendipitous encounters in the spaces between the beginning and the end—not unlike how walking or biking through a neighbourhood is an entirely different experience from driving through it.

I’d seen Jason Kottke do this over the years, but it was Joel Housman’s tweet three years ago that prompted me go ahead and make my own list.
